People across the country are always looking for ways to do their part in helping the environment. One option people don’t normally think of is filter sock. AGES Energy Field Services describes it as, “a tubular mesh sleeve that contains composted wood material. It meets PADEP and NRCS specifications for erosion control applications. Compost filter sock is a linear, land-based treatment that removes stormwater pollutants through filtration and deposition of soluble pollutants, suspended solids, and sediments.”
The main goal of those who use filter sock, is less pollution in the water. The filter socks can be installed on site and will trap sediment, rocks, harmful waste, and silt, all while allowing water to run through. Not only will it trap all of these unwanted particles, but it also eliminates the need to come back and clean it up.
The USDA NRCS Agronomy Tech Note 4 – Utilization of Compost Filter Socks also states the following as benefits of using filter socks:
- No trenching is required, therefore there is no soil, plant or root disturbance that happens during installation
- Filter socks are made from bio-based, recyclable, and locally-sourced materials
- They’re typically filled with plant materials that are native to the region they’re being used in. This enriches the biological production of the soils and stabilizes the soil ecosystem
- Filter socks are designed for many different types of land-based water filtration systems and can reduce a wide variety of harmful materials from stormwater runoff including sediment, bacteria, heavy metals, and petroleum hydrocarbons
At Bedrock Environmental, we offer pre-filled filter socks that are loaded on to pallets and shrink wrapped for your convenience. Each filter sock will contain shredded and ground hardwoods for next level sediment prevention.
