What Is Concrete Canvas® and How Does It Work?

Concrete Canvas® is a geosynthetic cementitious composite mat, often described as “concrete on a roll.” It’s a flexible fabric impregnated with a specially formulated dry concrete mix. When hydrated, it hardens to form a thin, durable, waterproof, and fire-resistant concrete layer.

  • The installation process is remarkably simple and efficient:
  • Prepare the surface: Clear the ground of large rocks and vegetation.
  • Unroll the canvas: Roll out the concrete cloth and cut it to fit the specific site.
  • Secure in place: Secure the canvas to the ground with pegs and anchors.
  • Add water: Spray it with water to begin the curing process.

Within 24 hours, the material is 80% cured and ready for service, transforming from a flexible fabric into a hard armor layer.

Where to Use Concrete Canvas®

The product’s versatility makes it an excellent solution for a wide range of applications across demanding industries, from energy development to public works. It excels in:

  • Erosion control: It is an ideal slope protection system material that prevents surface erosion from weathering and water runoff. Unlike traditional hard armor, it conforms to the landscape for a more natural and effective barrier.
  • Channel and ditch lining: For lining canals, ditches, and culverts, this material provides a durable and impermeable surface that prevents water loss and withstands high-flow conditions.
  • Industrial containment: Its chemical resistance and impermeability make it a reliable choice for secondary containment bunds around storage tanks and industrial facilities.

The Advantages Over Traditional Concrete

The primary reason so many contractors are turning to Concrete Canvas® is its clear advantages in efficiency and performance:

Rolled geotextile on a snowy roadside embankment with wooden concrete forms, rebar grid, and distant houses and streetlights.

You can install up to 10 times faster than conventional concrete, drastically reducing project schedules and labor costs.

Durability and Performance

Concrete Canvas® delivers long-term performance in the harshest environments. It has a certified durability of up to 120 years for erosion control applications and is up to twice as abrasion-resistant as standard poured concrete. It also boasts excellent resistance to UV degradation and a wide range of chemicals, ensuring its integrity for decades to come.
